St. John - Romeo is a participating church in MCREST (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team).  MCREST has been providing temporary emergency shelter for the homeless community since 1988.  One week every year we open our church facilities to 30 people, providing a safe, clean environment, three meals per day, showers, laundry assistance, and transportation.

During our week of sheltering, over 100 volunteers from our congregation serve the needs of our guests.  Volunteers assist in the following ways:

  • Transporting items from the previous sheltering church
  • Setting up sleeping, eating, recreation, and bathroom areas
  • Preparing and serving meals
  • Providing laundry services
  • Registering guests each night
  • Providing overnight supervision
  • Tearing down and cleaning up the church at the end of the week
  • Providing a listening ear when someone wants to talk

St. John's host week is usually in early September. If you would like to help in this very important and rewarding ministry, please contact the church office 586.752.4588.
