Congregational Greeting and Theme of the Day:
“Flourishing”
PRAYER OF THE DAY:
O God you are the Lord of seed and harvest. Your ways are often unknown to us. Make us ready for the growth you would bring through us. Plant in our hearts lives that will bloom with love, justice and mercy. In Jesus name Amen.
FIRST READING: Samuel 16:3-13
3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." 4Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, "Do you come in peace?" 5Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the LORD." 7But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either." 9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the LORD chosen this one." 10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." 12So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." 13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah. “Here ends the first lesson.”
Psalm 20
1 For the director of music. A psalm of David. May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
3 May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. Selah
4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests.
6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
8 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.
9 O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21
16So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 4:30-34
30Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade." 33With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Funding-raising Help URGENTLY Needed!
The Baseball fundraiser in early May was a huge success. In fact, we did such a good job the baseball league wants us back to do their closing day picnic. The bad news is the league has changed the day for the closing picnic. Usually at the end of June, they have moved it up one week, to Saturday, 20 June 2009.
We need 6-8 people to volunteer their time and have fun while working! Some of the members who have volunteered the past 3 years will NOT be available this year, so I counting on the rest of the congregation to step forward and help. If we cannot support this effort the church will lose this fundraiser!
No money will exchange hands. The league will buy all of the food and drink. Our job will be to set up table and chairs, cook and serve the food (hotdogs again!), and then clean up. For this effort, the league will donate $300 to the church.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2009; 9:00 a.m.--3:00 p.m. at Powell Middle School, 29-mile & Jewell Road.
If you want more information on the event e-mail or call Dave Hudson (

Prayerfully consider donating your time to this worthwhile event.

This year we have two St. John softball teams: the Saints and the Angels. Don Schwartz is managing the "older and more experienced" Saints team, while Scott Hudson is managing the new upstart Angels team. The two softball schedules will be posted in the Gathering Area. All games start at 7 PM on Thursday evenings. We invite our fans to come on out to the ball park and watch our games! Please bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, as many ball fields do not have any bleachers.
Please save your pop can tabs and turn them in at the church for the purchase of kidney machines. Over 109 and ¾ lbs. have been collected since February 2007! This fundraiser is for the purchase of kidney machines.

Saturday Worship Action Team (SWAT):
Do you enjoy Saturday night worship? Are you interested in how this service functions; or, would you like some changes made? The SWAT members meet every 2 months for
approximately 1/2 hour after a Saturday service. Working with the team does not require much of your time and it's easy! Each person takes a turn "ushering" a service and always with another team member. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Mark.
Our next meeting is June 27th - hope to see you there!
If you have an extra vehicle you have been considering donating, please call Charity Motors Car Donation Program and tell them you want to donate your vehicle and designate the proceeds to St. John Lutheran Church. You will receive a tax donation while helping our church!

THE STEPHEN’S MINISTRY
How does the referrals process work?
1. A person, either yourself, a relative, or friend is hurting and in need of Christian care.
2. The Stephen Ministry Referrals Coordinator learns about this need for care from a pastor, a friend, or from the person in need of care and only after the person has granted permission.
3. The referrals coordinator meets with the person to talk about Stephen Ministry.
4. With the person’s permission, the referrals coordinator assigns a Stephen Minister to meet on a weekly basis with that person.
5. The Stephen Minister provides distinctively Christian and strictly confidential care.
Our Stephen’s Ministers are these to help....
