PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Giver of manna, feed our deepest hungers.  Break the bread that nourishes relationship.  Break the bread that heals our fracturings.  Break the bread that nourishes life in your presence.  We seek you, for you are our life.  Amen.

FIRST READING:  2 Samuel 12:1-7a, 13-15
1The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.  2The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.  4"Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him."  5David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!  6He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity."  7Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.  8I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.  9Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.  10Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'  11"This is what the LORD says: 'Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.  12You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.'"  13Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.  14But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die."  15After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to David, and he became ill.

Psalm 51:1-12
1     When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with
Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according
to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2     Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3     For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
4     Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that
you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.
5     Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6     Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ; you teach me wisdom in the inmost
       place.
7     Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8     Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9     Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
10    Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11    Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12    Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain
        me.

Second Reading:  Ephesians 4:1-6
1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.  2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  4There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called--5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able):     WOV No. 613
C:                                      Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 6th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  John 6:24-35
24Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.  25When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"  26Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.  27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."  28Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"  29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."  30So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?  31Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"  32Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.  33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."  34"Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread."  35Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:                                             “Bread of Life”                                David Hudson

PRAISE HYMN:                              Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong.  They are weak but He is strong.

Refrain    Yes, Jesus loves me.  Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died, heaven’s gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.

Refrain

Jesus loves me, this I know, as he loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee, saying, “Let them come to Me.”

Refrain

OFFERING/OFFERTORY (stand and sing): WOV Page 35
C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the  bread of life.
Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now.
Grace our table with your presence, Lord, and give us a foretaste of the feast to  come.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God

C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
 our Lord.  Amen.

After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together:

In moments like these I sing out a song,
I sing out a love song to Jesus.

CONFESSION:
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us from
our sin to live for you alone.  Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that, attentive to
your Word, we may confess our sins, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the
fullness of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
 Gracious God,
C: Have mercy on us.  In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things done and left undone.  Uphold us by your Spirit so that we
may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy
name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface,  concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Congregation sings:
C:                   Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna.  Hosanna.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

P:  In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all
people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.

What is Katie’s Fund?
Katie’s Fund was established in 1997 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Women of the ELCA.  The principal generates interest income for the support of Women of the ElCA ministries in global sharing, leadership develop-ment, and nurturing faith.  To allow Katie’s Fund to grow in its early years, the interest earned has been spent sparingly.  The fund has assisted in supporting ministries with young women at the 2002 & 2005 triennial gatherings of WELCA, global travel on behalf of our organization, and a WELCA presence at ELCA national youth gatherings.
