PRAYER OF THE DAY:
Leading Spirit, open our lives to your presence and guide us in your new paths.  Transform us, and give us the courage to shape our community according to your grace-filled, challenging, and exhilarating ways.  Amen

SPECIAL MUSIC:                 “This Is the Day”                      Pat Rohloff and Family
                                                                                                            And Mike Palmer

FIRST READING:  2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33
5The king commanded Joab, Abishai and Ittai, "Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake." And all the troops heard the king giving orders concerning Absalom to each of the commanders.  6The army marched into the field to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. 7There the army of Israel was defeated by David's men, and the casualties that day were great--twenty thousand men.  8The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest claimed more lives that day than the sword.  9Now Absalom happened to meet David's men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom's head got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.  15And ten of Joab's armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him.  31Then the Cushite arrived and said, "My lord the king, hear the good news! The LORD has delivered you today from all who rose up against you."  32The king asked the Cushite, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" The Cushite replied, "May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man."  33The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you--O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Psalm 130
1     Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
2     O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
3     If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
4     But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
5     I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.
6     My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more
       than watchmen wait for the morning.
7     O Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him
       is full redemption.
8     He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

Second Reading:  James 2:14-26
14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?  15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.  16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?  17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.  18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.  19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.  20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?  21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?  22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.  23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.  24You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.  25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?  26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  John 6:35, 41-51
35Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.  41At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."  42They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"  43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered.  44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.  45It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.  46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.  47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.  48I am the bread of life.  49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died.  50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.   51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

SERMON:                                   “Faith Without Works”                             David Hudson
Can be heard on the website after Mondays.

Saturday Worship Action Team (SWAT):

Do you enjoy Saturday night worship? Are you interested in how this service functions; or, would you like some changes made? The SWAT members meet every 2 months for
approximately 1/2 hour after a Saturday service. Working with the team does not require much of your time and it's easy! Each person takes a turn "ushering" a service and always with another team member. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Mark.
Our next meeting is August 15th - hope to see you there!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE
There are about 200 giving units in our church and if each unit gave an extra $10 each month at the end of the year we would have an additional $24,000.  Please consider a slight increase in your commitment to the ministry here at St. John and help solve our financial problem.

UPCOMING SERMON SERIES
Do you have any suggestions for Pastor Mark?  Are there any subjects you would like to see turned into a Sermon Series?  Do you have any questions or concerns that you would like to see PM
develop into a Sermon Series for this fall?  If you do then tell Pastor or call the church office.

If you have an extra vehicle you have been considering donating, please call Charity Motors Car Donation Program and tell them you want to donate your vehicle and designate the proceeds to St. John Lutheran Church.  You will receive a tax donation while helping our church!
