WORSHIP 9:30 AM

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP
P=Presiding, A=Assisting, C=Congregation

Prelude Jan Evans

Congregational Greeting and Theme of the Day:
“Be Love”

ENTRANCE HYMN (stand):      “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” LBW No. 315

GREETING:
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
 and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.

KYRIE: WOV Page 28

HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: You have called us in love, O God, to be your children.  May we remember this love when we feel unloved.  May we practice this love when others rely on us.  You, O God, are love.  So may we be love in you.   Amen.

BAPTISM:   (No photographs, please until after worship.  The Service of Baptism is an opportunity for all of us to remember our Baptisms.)

P:   Dear Parents and Sponsors, you have brought Ava Simmone Drwencke to this place because God wants her to be washed and cleansed.  Through sin, we live in a broken world, but in baptism, by water and the spirit, we are reborn children of God and made members of Christ’s Body.

S:   We present Ava Simmone Drwencke to be washed in God’s Baptismal water.

P:   As parents and sponsors, you are now asked to see that this child grows up in the
Christian Faith; that she learns the stories of our Faith.  See to it that through your lives she understands the meaning of the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. Make sure that she experiences the love of Christ through your love, for it is Christ’s love which shall sustain her throughout her life.  Will you keep these promises?

Parents & Sponsors:   We will.

P:   Together, with this Congregation of Believers, will you affirm your faith and the Faith into which Ava is baptized?

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:  (congregation together)
God is love, and in God is the source of all goodness and truth.  God is the creator of the universe and continues to recreate with us a kingdom of compassion for all humankind.  Jesus is God’s Son.  Jesus was born of Mary, lived a life of kindness and concern, died a cruel death on an executioner’s cross, and was raised on the third day to a new life.  Jesus’ life is our life.  We can now
live a life of kindness and concern; we can die and be raised to new life; we can live as forgiven sinners, confident of our place in eternity.  We can respond to the call of Christ to follow him.  The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, alive and at work, establishing and building the realm of God on this earth.  The Spirit of God leads us into the true faith, guides us through the difficult choices of life, and comforts us when we feel as if we cannot go on.  God is with us, living inside of us, through the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

THE BAPTISM:  Ava Simmone Drwencke, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

BAPTISMAL PRAYER
P:   Ava, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever.

A:   Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME:    We welcome you into the Lord’s family.  We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

 Today we welcome Ava Simmone Drwencke into our family of Christ.  Ava is the daughter of Robert and Jamie (Box) Drwencke of Washington.   Ava’s sponsors are Ty and Lynn Kelly of Servierville, Tennessee.

THE WORD OF GOD:
First Reading:  James 1:17-27
17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.  18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.  21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.  22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.  23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.  26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.  27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9
1   My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

2   You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever.

6   Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

7   You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.

8   All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.

9   Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.

Second Lesson: 2nd Corinthians 5:17-21
17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!  18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.  20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.  21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
     Celtic Alleluia

                                       Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 7th Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

The Holy Gospel:  Mark 7:14-23
14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.  15Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.'"  16Let anyone with ears to hear, listen.  17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.  18"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'?  19For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")  20He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.'21For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,  22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.  23All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON                                                                                            Nick Billardello

PRAISE HYMN:                           Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong.  They are weak but He is strong.

Refrain    Yes, Jesus loves me.  Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died, heaven’s gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.

Refrain

Jesus loves me, this I know, as he loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee, saying, “Let them come to Me.”

Refrain

OFFERING/OFFERTORY: (Stand, if you are able, and sing)…………. LBW 565

 Praise Him, all creatures here below;
 Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
 Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

A: Let us pray. Merciful God,

C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what You have first given us--ourselves,  our time, and our possessions, signs of Your gracious love.  Receive them  for the sake of Him who offered Himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.

In moments like these I sing out a song,
I sing out a love song to Jesus.
In moments like these I lift up my hands,
I lift up my hands to the Lord.

Singing, ‘I love you, Lord.’  Singing, ‘I love you, Lord.’
Singing, ‘I love you, Lord, I love you.’

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34

  Give us this day our daily bread;
  and forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us;
