P: Kyrie eleison:
C: Lord, have mercy.

Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to god, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you,
We give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Lord, we confess that it is hard to believe that out of the turbulence of life a new kingdom comes.  Open our hearts to see the possibilities of what your grace and mercy can do.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen!

PRAISE HYMN:                       “Shine, Jesus, Shine”   WOV No. 651

FIRST READING:  Romans 8:18-25
18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.
20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.  23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.  24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?  25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Psalm 142
1         I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.
2   I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble.
3   When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a snare for me.
4   Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.
5   I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
6   Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.
7   Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

Second Reading:  Acts 8:1b-3
1bOn that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.  2Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.  3But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able):     WOV No. 613
C:
                                     Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 8th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Mark 8:31-33
31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.  32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.  33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:          “Terrible Todays Lead to Good Tomorrows”        Pastor Mark Evans

OFFERING/OFFERTORY (stand and sing): WOV Page 35
C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the  bread of life.
Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now.
Grace our table with your presence, Lord, and give us a foretaste of the feast to  come.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
 our Lord.  Amen.

Announcements and Recognition of Visitors
People Concerns for the Week Pastor Mark Evans

After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together:

PRAYER HYMN:
God Will Make a Way

God will make a way where there seems to be no way.
He works in ways we cannot see; He will make a way for me.

He will be my Guide, hold me closely to His side.
With love and strength for each new day, He will make a way.
He will make a way.

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people  according to their needs.

Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
  A: Lord, in your mercy,
  C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.

CONFESSION:
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us from
our sin to live for you alone.  Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that, attentive to
your Word, we may confess our sins, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the
fullness of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
 Gracious God,
C: Have mercy on us.  In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things done and left undone.  Uphold us by your Spirit so that we
may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy
name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

PARDON:
P: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you
 in eternal life.
C: Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface,  concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Congregation sings:
C:                   Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna.  Hosanna.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

P:  In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all
people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER:  WOV Page 39
P:  Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
  Give us this day our daily bread;
  and forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
   forever and ever. Amen.

Haiti Earthquake Relief
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
On January 12th, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti .                                                  Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. The presidential palace is in ruins and many churches have been destroyed. Hospitals are overflowing and the search for survivors is intense.                                                                             The streets of Haiti are filled with people in shock and searching for loved ones among the rubble.                                                                                              Your help is needed today to bring immediate relief and continued hope for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. About 3 million lives, one-third of Haiti’s population, are affected by this earthquake.                                                  Already one of the poorest countries in the world (70 percent of Haiti's population lives in extreme poverty), this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty.                                                       ELCA Disaster Response is already working through long-standing partnerships on the ground to provide emergency food, water, shelter and medical supplies.              Financial gifts are urgently needed. Your gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response, designated for Haiti Earthquake Relief, will be used entirely (100 percent) for immediate relief and ongoing recovery in Haiti. Your prayers and generous gifts will make a life-saving difference. Please give today at www.elca.org/haitiearthquake
