The Office of Licensed Minister
The most important considerations in the training of workers in the church are that they comprehend the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and are able to articulate this good news. This is essential because the gospel is the center of the church’s life and shapes its people into a community. The church, through its constituted organizations, provides leadership of various kinds, such as pastors, associates in ministry, deaconesses, and diaconal ministers. The church also provides training, oversight and support for those leaders. The Synod may also authorize persons to assume other types of leadership roles in congregations, that the purpose of the Church is served. The training, authorization for service, supervision, and accountability of these persons remains with the Synod. The office of a Licensed Minister in the Southeast Michigan Synod has been created to enrich, amplify, and support the work of congregations through a 2-year program of study and a 6-month internship. Primarily, the Licensed Minister is to be involved in the mission and outreach of the church as it seeks to draw others into its fellowship, minister to the needs of the community, and strengthen the faithful lives of the baptized. As such, Licensed Ministers may have a variety of functions, such as teacher, catechist, evangelist, social service coordinator, preacher, youth worker, parish administrator, and so forth. In addition, when a congregation does not have the services of a pastor, the licensed minister may be authorized by the Bishop to preach and preside at Holy Communion.

Items of Interest!
- It is the policy of the Synod that Licensed Ministers who are presiding at a worship service that includes Holy Communion notify the Synod office and receive permission to preside from the Bishop. In circumstances where the church or the Licensed Minister may not receive approval prior to the service being conducted (because of emergencies, short notice, availability of Bishop) the congregation should NOT cancel the offering of Holy Communion. Retroactive receipt of LM's authorization to preside is acceptable.
- Communicating the Gospel with Pastor Hank Flatt is scheduled to begin May 12, 2012 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Saint Clair Shores (www.bethelscsmi.org). This is the last scheduled class before the summer break. Classes will resume in September with Christian Discipleship starting Sept 08, 2012.
- Our Summer Retreat is scheduled for June 23, 2012, 8:30am-3:00pm at Holy Cross, Livonia (30650 Six-Mile Road, Livonia, MI. 48152). The scheduled topics include a Licensed Ministry Program Review in the morning, and afternoon classes on Visitations; Grief, Death and Dying; Spiritual Gifts; and a class on LM supervision reserved for Supervising Pastors. Don't forget to invite your Pastor to the retreat! Look for a special flyer and details in upcoming emails.
- NOTE! In order to better serve the students and faculty a class evaluation form MUST be filled out by every student and instructor. Your written evaluation form serves as OFFICIAL PROOF of your attendance and, for instructors, is the trigger to authorize your payment.
