WORSHIP 9:30 AM
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP P=Presiding, A=Assisting, C=Congregation
Prelude Jan Evans
Congregational Greeting and Theme of the Day:
“Why Do We Make the Christian Faith So Boring?”
ENTRANCE HYMN (stand): “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” Green Book #439
GREETING:
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
KYRIE: WOV Page 28
HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: O God, who out of nothing brought everything that is, out of what we are bring more of what we dream but haven’t dared; direct our power and passion to creating life where there is death, to putting flesh of action on bare-boned intentions, to lighting fires against the midnight of indifference, to throwing bridges of care across canyons of loneliness; so we can look on creation, together with you, and behold, call it very good; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
CHILDREN’S SERMON Pastor Mark Evans
BAPTISM: (No photographs, please until after worship. The Service of Baptism is an opportunity for all of us to remember our Baptisms.)
P: Dear Parents and Sponsors, you have brought Ethan Lee Grover to this place because God wants him to be washed and cleansed. Through sin, we live in a broken world, but in baptism, by water and the spirit, we are reborn children of God and made members of Christ’s Body.
S: We present Ethan Lee Grover to be washed in God’s Baptismal water.
P: As parents and sponsors, you are now asked to see that this child grows up in the
Christian Faith; that he learn the stories of our Faith. See to it that through your lives he understands the meaning of the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. Make sure that he experiences the love of Christ through your love, for it is Christ’s love which shall sustain him throughout his life. Will you keep these promises?
Parents & Sponsors: We will.
P: Together, with this Congregation of Believers, will you affirm your faith and the Faith into which Ethan is baptized?
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: (congregation together)
God is love, and in God is the source of all goodness and truth. God is the creator of the universe and continues to recreate with us a kingdom of compassion for all humankind. Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus was born of Mary, lived a life of kindness and concern, died a cruel death on an executioner’s cross, and was raised on the third day to a new life. Jesus’ life is our life. We can now
live a life of kindness and concern; we can die and be raised to new life; we can live as forgiven sinners, confident of our place in eternity. We can respond to the call of Christ to follow him. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, alive and at work, establishing and building the realm of God on this earth. The Spirit of God leads us into the true faith, guides us through the difficult choices of life, and comforts us when we feel as if we cannot go on. God is with us, living inside of us, through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE BAPTISM: Ethan Lee Grover, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
BAPTISMAL PRAYER
P: Ethan, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever.
A: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME: We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.
Today we welcome Ethan Lee Grover into our family of Christ. Ethan is the son of Kurtis and Juli Ann (Rydquist) Grover of Leonard. Ethan’s sponsors are Carly Rydquist and Matthew Shar.
THE WORD OF GOD:
First Reading: Genesis 1:1-3, 26-31
1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 26Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so. 31God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.
Psalm 8
1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set
your glory above the heavens.
2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because
of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the
stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care
for him?
5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with
glory and honor.
6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything
under his feet:
7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of
the seas.
9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13
11Finally, brothers, good-bye. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13All the saints send their greetings.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28th Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
The Holy Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20
16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON: “Why Do We Make the Christian Faith So Boring?” David Hudson
PRAISE HYMN: Sanctuary
Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true;
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for You.
Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true;
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for You.
OFFERING/OFFERTORY: (Stand, if you are able, and sing)…………. LBW 565
C: Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God,
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what You have first given us--ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of Your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of Him who offered Himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together:
Bind Us Together
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, with cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, Bind us together in love.
There is only one God. There is only one King.
There is only one Body. That is why we sing.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, with cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, Bind us together in love.
THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34

P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER: (Stand if you are able) WOV Page 39
P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

We need your help!
● On the evening of Saturday, July 17th a group of youth and adults will be coming to Romeo. They are from Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Kent City, MI. They are going White Water rafting with our St. John group and will need housing for Saturday night, and then they will worship with us on Sunday morning. The group is comprised of 6 high school girls, 2 female adult sponsors, 7 high school boys and 2 male adult sponsors. So if you could provide housing for Saturday night it would be greatly appreciated. Just call the church office and tell us how many you can put up for the night.
● There will also be a need for housing four Day Camp Counselors during the week of VBS & Day Camp from July 31st – August 5th. Thank you!

GUERRILLAS OF GRACE
Small Group Meeting
Beginning Thursday, June 9th, 6:30-8:00pm, St. John will be hosting small group meetings based on “Guerrillas of Grace” by Ted Loder. Each week readings from “Guerrillas” will lead us into a discussion about our individual theologies and faith as it shapes our life together as individuals and the church. I believe that we can no longer let academics, our culture, or politics enforce upon us a faith that rightly belongs to us – transforming us to transform our church and society. Please come and join us in honest dialogue about God, Christ, and the World.
Purchasing “Guerrillas of Grace” is not required.
Peace,
Dave Hudson, Licensed Minister, 586-786-1696
